The K-IV project has just been given a green signal from the Sindh Government. This is great news because this means that a massive canal can be built to supply water to many regions of Karachi. This is lake water and it is being extracted from the Kinjhar Lake.

The project was already designed, all the costing had been completed and the committee in charge told the Sindh government all pros and cons of this construction. However, it requires minor changes now. The changes will require all new costing due to this minor change though. The committee that has evaluated the plans has recommended that the original route of the canal should not be changed. Once the construction is completed, the canal is going to supply water to more than a million households.

Background:

The K-IV is atleast an 11-year-old plan. It has been in place way before Bahria Town Karachi had been developed. The plan has used up around 11.2 billion PKR over the years and is set to make the land ripe with rich, clean, drinking water. The project was halted, however, earlier on. This was because some design issues had emerged as a problem. The Sindh government started to examine the issues. K-IV was commissioned by the KW&SB, designed by Osmani & Co Ltd, and was to be built by the FWO. The little pause caused a great effect on the spending on the project.

Years later, the issues have been resolved. And this allows the construction to continue. The older plan needs to be revisited now. This should not take nearly as long as it did or was expected when the plan was initially released. The canal is going to fuel a lot of smaller projects around the city as well. Nespak was able to identify some issues for the Sindh government. For example, the 121km route Osmani chose went through very hilly areas. Why this was so, is still unknown. Furthermore, the technical committee suggested that Nespak’s issues did not justify a change or the need to look for an alternate route. This also meant that the need to supply water to the civilians is much more essential than contingents that have very little impact on the performance of the canal.

Now, the Sindh government is ready to acquire rest of the land that is not in their possession at the moment. There are going to be slight reinforcements as per latest technology and improvements as per design considerations of course.
